NHL Player Profile: Teemu Selänne (1/31)
Hey everyone! Throughout the month of August
JF_112 had an
awesome OC series where he had Redditors vote for who their favourite players are from each team.
I figured I would put together an ongoing series where I write an in depth summary about each voted player and their careers so that new (and old) fans can get to know these amazing players better.
Today we will be focusing on
/hockey's favourite player for the Anaheim Ducks:
Teemu Selänne EARLY DAYS AND ATTRIBUTES
Birthdate: July 3rd, 1970
Birthplace: Helsinki, Finland
Height/Weight: 6'0"/196 lb
Nicknames: The Finnish Flash
Jersey Numbers: #8, #13
JunioMinor Teams: Jokerit
NHL Draft: Selected 10th Overall in 1988 by Winnipeg
Position: Right Wing
Shoots: Right
Status: Retired
NHL PLAYING CAREER
Winnipeg Jets (1992-1996)
Season | Games Played | Goals | Assists | Points |
1992-93 | 84 | 76 | 56 | 132 |
1993-94 | 51 | 25 | 29 | 54 |
1994-95 | 45 | 22 | 26 | 48 |
1995-96 | 51 | 24 | 48 | 72 |
Total | 231 | 147 | 159 | 306 |
- Seasons Summary: Selänne set numerous records for a Rookie in his first NHL season (1992-93), scoring 76 goals and putting up 132 points. He was still over a point per game in each season after that however he is most known for his outstanding rookie campaign where he won the Calder Memorial Trophy.
- Selänne was traded to Anaheim on February 6, 1996. The Mighty Ducks sent first-round draft picks Chad Kilger and Oleg Tverdovsky, along with a third-round selection at the 1996 NHL Entry Draft, in exchange for Selänne, Marc Chouinard and a fourth-round draft pick.
Mighty Ducks of Anaheim (1995-2001)
Season | Games Played | Goals | Assists | Points |
1995-96 | 28 | 16 | 20 | 36 |
1996-97 | 78 | 51 | 58 | 109 |
1997-98 | 73 | 52 | 34 | 86 |
1998-99 | 75 | 47 | 60 | 107 |
1999-00 | 79 | 33 | 52 | 85 |
2000-01 | 61 | 26 | 33 | 59 |
Total | 394 | 225 | 257 | 482 |
- Seasons Summary: In the 1996-97 season, Selänne broke 50 goals for the 2nd time in his short career and added another 58 assists for 109 points. He came in 2nd in goals behind Keith Tkachuk (52) that year but then led the NHL in the following 2 seasons with 52 and 47 goals respectively.
- Selänne was traded to San Jose on March 5, 2001. Selänne was sent to San Jose in exchange for Jeff Friesen, Steve Shields and a second-round selection in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft.
San Jose Sharks (2001-2003)
Season | Games Played | Goals | Assists | Points |
2000-01 | 12 | 7 | 6 | 13 |

2002-03 | 82 | 28 | 36 | 64 |
Total | 176 | 64 | 67 | 131 |
- Seasons Summary: In the 2002-03 season, Selänne put up 64 points in 82 to lead the Sharks both in Goals and Points. Unfortunately, they ended up missing the playoffs after making the 2nd round the year before (2001-02) losing to Colorado in 7 games.
- Selänne opted to sign with Colorado in the 2003 offseason, reuniting with former Mighty Duck teammate Paul Kariya.
Colorado Avalanche (2003-2004)
Season | Games Played | Goals | Assists | Points |
2003-04 | 78 | 16 | 16 | 32 |
Total | 78 | 16 | 16 | 32 |
- Seasons Summary: The signing didn't go as planned for Selänne as he had his lowest goals, assists and point totals in a season in 2003-04 on a Colorado team which was destined to be Stanley Cup favourites. He also went through Knee surgery and used the 2004-05 lockout season as much needed recovery time.
- After the lockout, Selänne signed a 1 year deal to return to Anaheim where he would stay for the rest of his NHL career.
Mighty Ducks of Anaheim/Anaheim Ducks (2005-2014)
Season | Games Played | Goals | Assists | Points |
2005-06 | 80 | 40 | 50 | 90 |
2006-07 | 82 | 48 | 46 | 94 |
2007-08 | 26 | 12 | 11 | 23 |
2008-09 | 65 | 27 | 27 | 54 |
2009-10 | 54 | 27 | 21 | 48 |
2010-11 | 73 | 31 | 49 | 80 |
2011-12 | 82 | 26 | 40 | 66 |
2012-13 | 46 | 12 | 12 | 24 |
2013-14 | 64 | 9 | 18 | 27 |
Total | 572 | 232 | 274 | 506 |
- Seasons Summary: Selänne immediately bounced back after his dismal 2003-04 season with Colorado. He put up 90 points in 2005-06 and then topped it with 94 points in 2006-07, leading the Anaheim Ducks to their first and only Stanley Cup. After a few injury riddled seasons, he came back in full force in 2010-11 registering 80 points in 73 games.
- Selänne played his last game on May 16, 2014 as the LA Kings defeated the Ducks in Game 7 of the 2nd round.

Predators Prospect Update Thread (Mar 2)
Hey guys! Back again with the prospect updates. If you want to check out old threads, look no further:
Jan 7 World Juniors recap Dec 3 Nov 18 Nov 4 Oct 20 Oct 6 Ok so now onto the prospects. First I will explain what is in the table. For some of the stats, I have the value itself, and then also their ranking on their team in that stat in parentheses. So for example, for shots per game you would see 4 (5), which would mean they take 4 shots a game on average, and that ranks fifth on the team. For defensive prospects, you will see both their team rank and the rank among defenseman on the team. Using shots per game as an example, if you saw 4 (5,2), that would mean they take 4 shots a game on average, which ranks fifth on the team as a whole, and ranks second among defenseman on the team. Additionally, with TOI/GP, the rankings will read (team rank, rank for forwards/defenseman).
Player | Position | League | GP | G | A | P | TOI/GP | S/GP | P/60 | Notes |
Eeli Tolvanen | LW | KHL | 49 | 19 (T1) | 17 (5) | 36 (2) | 15:54 (11,4) | 3.5 (1) | 2.77 (1) | As I am sure you guys know, Tolvanen lit up the Olympics over the past couple of weeks. He returned to Helsinki and finished off the KHL regular season with 2 goals in 2 games, as well as setting the U19 goal scoring record in the KHL (previously in a tie with Kuznetsov). Jokerit’s playoff campaign begins this Saturday. |
Pavel Koltygin | LW | QMJHL | 55 | 15 (T6) | 23 (T6) | 38 (7) | 14:18 (12,7) | 1.84 (7) | 2.9 (3) | Drummondville has added some offensive pieces gearing up for the playoffs, and Koltygin has seen himself fall down the lineup. He is still producing well given his minutes (as you can see with him being third on the team in P/60), but he has actually seen a drop in production this year compared to his draft year, which is generally a bad sign. |
Jacob Paquette | D | OHL | 54 | 3 (T18,4) | 9 (16,5) | 12 (17,4) | NA | 1.02 (19,5) | NA | Paquette was in a similar situation as Koltygin. Kingston added a lot of pieces for the playoff push, and Paquette saw his role fall from a top pairing defenseman to a bottom four defensemen. Paquette still has a very good defensive game for the OHL, but the lack of any offensive improvement this season cast doubt on any NHL potential. |
Dante Fabbro | D | NCAA | 32 | 9 (4,1) | 17 (T2,1) | 26 (T4,1) | NA | 2.66 (6,2) | NA | Fabbro has had a huge sophomore season. He is sixth in defensive scoring for underclassmen, and the only player in the same area with defensive ability near Fabbro’s is Harvard defenseman and Flames prospect Adam Fox. Fabbro is BU’s #1, and he has been their rock defensively the past month with Chad Krys out. Don’t be surprised to see him challenge for a roster spot this summer. |
Rem Pitlick | RW | NCAA | 36 | 11 (3) | 15 (3) | 26 (T1) | NA | 2.69 (1) | NA | Pitlick has had a solid sophomore season at Minnesota. He has mainly played on a line with Mittelstadt, so take his production with a slight grain of salt. However, he did produce at near point per game pace the previous season. |
Patrick Harper | LW | NCAA | 20 | 8 (5) | 13 (5) | 21 (7) | NA | 1.8 (9) | NA | Patrick Harper was recently ruled out for the rest of the season with an illness. By per game metrics, Harper is the leader on BU in nearly all offensive statistics. He has some of the best hands I have seen on a player at his age. However, to temper expectations a little, he is small (both height and weight), and isn’t the most physical player, which leads me to believe he will be a top six or bust type of player. Now having said that, Harper made major strides forward in his defensive game this season compared to last season. |
Tommy Novak | C | NCAA | 32 | 3 (T11) | 23 (1) | 26 (T1) | NA | 1.75 (T7) | NA | Novak is a slick passer and a great playmaker. I wouldn’t be surprised if Poile signs him when his college season is over and he gets some playing time with Milwaukee. His puck control is fantastic and he has usually play in a depth role but still produces at a first line clip. |
Grant Mismash | LW | NCAA | 32 | 8 (5) | 12 (T4) | 20 (5) | NA | 2.44 (4) | NA | Mismash has mainly played in UND’s middle six, often with subpar players. His point totals aren’t fantastic, but I really like Mismash. He has a ton of skill, and he is also super gritty (think Hartman). I wouldn’t be surprised if he breaks out in a big way next season when he is a consistent part of UND’s top line. |
David Farrance | D/LW | NCAA | 25 | 1 (T16) | 5 (T13) | 6 (15) | NA | 1.4 (14) | NA | Farrance has had a rough first year at BU. Farrance often found himself in a bottom pairing role or even out of the lineup at times due to BU’s defensive depth. For the past month or so, Farrance has been playing on the wing on the third line, and has looked fine. He has the offensive skill to be a good defenseman, but his defensive game needs major work. |
Emil Pettersson | C | AHL | 51 | 10 (T5) | 24 (1) | 34 (T1) | NA | 1.75 (6) | NA | Pettersson along with Gaudreau and maybe others will likely be the first call-up from Milwaukee if the Preds get decimated by injuries up front. |
Anthony Richard | C | AHL | 54 | 12 (4) | 12 (9) | 24 (7) | NA | 1.89 (5) | NA | Richard is 30 in primary point production, 34 in point production, and 24 in shot production for players in the AHL 20 or younger (per game stats). |
Alexandre Carrier | D | AHL | 55 | 3 (T14,T2) | 19 (2,1) | 22 (T8,2) | NA | 1.36 (17,6) | NA | Carrier has mainly been on the Admirals top pairing, playing with Jimmy Oligny. Carrier is also seventh in the AHL for defenseman point production by defenseman 20 or younger. |
Justin Kirkland | LW | AHL | 54 | 5 (T10) | 9 (T10) | 14 (T10) | NA | 1.35 (18) | NA | NA |
Yakov Trenin | LW | AHL | 29 | 3 (T15) | 7 (T13) | 10 (16) | NA | 1.69 (8) | NA | Trenin has dealt with injuries throughout this season, and has usually found himself in the bottom six. |
Tyler Moy | C | AHL | 52 | 5 (T10) | 8 (11) | 13 (12) | NA | 1.02 (22) | NA | NA |
Jack Dougherty | D | AHL | 42 | 1 (T21,T6) | 7 (T13,4) | 8 (18,5) | NA | 1.24 (21,7) | NA | Dougherty only has three primary points on the season, which is pretty shit for any player in any league. |
Frederic Allard | D | AHL | 41 | 4 (T13,2) | 10 (10,3) | 14 (T10,3) | NA | 1.51 (14,4) | NA | Allard is third in defensive point production and shot generation for defenseman under the age of 20 in the AHL, and around Carrier's spots when you expand it to defenseman 21 or younger. |
Joonas Lyytinen | D | AHL | 24 | 1 | 3 | 4 | NA | 1.42 | NA | NA |
Hardy Haman Aktell | D | SuperElit | 9 | 1 | 1 | 2 | NA | NA | NA | NA |
For GAA and save percentage, the two numbers are league rank/total goalies in the league. So (10,30) would mean the 10th best GAA out of 30 goalies in the league.
Player | League | Gp | GAA | Sv% | Notes |
Konstantin Volkov | MHL | 23 | 1.65 (3,78) | 0.933 (T3,78) | Volkov has killed the last half of the season, shooting up to one of the top five goalies in the league. |
Tomas Vomacka | USHL | 32 | 3.01 (16,36) | .897 (22,36) | N/A |
Karel Vejmelka | Czech | 10 | 2.1 (6,35) | 0.924 (8,35) | N/A |
There will not be a schedule posted for this update, as seasons are starting to wrap up, and playoff schedules aren’t released yet for many teams. In terms of future updates, expect one around mayish that will include player stats, my personal projection of them for the next season as well as NHL potential, and where our prospect pool stands. Also expect a post shortly before the draft detailing what kinds of holes we need to fill in the upcoming draft, and players that could fill those holes given where we pick.

Team Breakdowns The Hockey Writers
Canada
Coach Don Hay and Head Scout Kevin Prendergast didn’t have as many easy choices to make this year as they may have had in past years, as this year’s camp was about as wide open as you’re ever going to see in a Canadian selection camp. If you look at the roster, you could say that only about five players were locks to make this team. Using the 22-man roster we have now, that means that there were 17 spots up for grabs. For a Canadian national hockey team, that is an extremely high amount of open slots. Just to show how wide open it was, Coach Hay said afterwards that Tanner Pearson – the Ontario Hockey League’s points leader by a mile – was one of the last players to make the team. Before this season, most people had never even heard of Tanner Pearson. When a Canadian hockey fan thought of the Barrie Colts, they immediately thought of fellow Team Canada forward Mark Scheifele, and that was it. There would have been no mention of Pearson, not even a thought. Well, that’s all changed pretty quickly hasn’t it? Some analysts are saying that Canada could be considered an underdog in this years tournament in Alberta, on home ice. The Americans may have the more “visually appealing” roster, so that must make them the favourite, right? Oh, if only life were that simple.
Finland
Finland could be the biggest surprise of the tournament, in spite of having a very young roster. Talented players currently part of NHL organizations such as Mikael Granlund (drafted 9th overall 2010 by the Minnesota Wild), Teemu Pulkkinen (111th overall 2010 by the Detroit Red Wings) and Joel Armia (16th overall 2011 by the Buffalo Sabres) will look to lead the team to its first medal in the tournament since 2006. This year’s Finnish entry is considered their most talented in years, and presents a very strong chance to end that drought; perhaps even upsetting Canada along the way.
Tournament players to watch;[The Hockey News]
10. Mark Visentin, G, Canada (Phoenix Coyotes) Canada has struggled in the crease area at recent WJC tournaments, including Visentin's performance late in last year's event. He'll be under a lot of pressure to bounce back this time around.
9. Aleksander Barkov, C, Finland (2013 draft eligible) He's only 16, and won't be eligible for the NHL draft until 2013, but Barkov is the real deal. There's a good chance he plays on Finland's third line (at least), so he may become a factor here.
8. Mikhail Grigorenko, C, Russia (2012 draft eligible) Arguably the most dynamic player in the QMJHL this season, Grigorenko will look to improve his '12 draft stock (or at least maintain it). Not everyone is sold on his upside, so he needs to stand out.
7. Emerson Etem, RW, USA (Anaheim Ducks) There is plenty of scoring potential on Team USA this time around, but the spotlight could be squarely on WHL second-leading scorer Etem. The California speedster has 30 goals in 34 games this year.
6. Jaden Schwartz, LW, Canada (St. Louis Blues) Seeking redemption here, Schwartz will look for better luck after fracturing his ankle in the tournament a year ago. The speedy sophomore has 18 points in 13 games at Colorado College this season.
5. Evgeny Kuznetsov, LW/RW, Russia (Washington Capitals) Expected to join the Capitals next season, Kuznetsov is among the KHL scoring leaders in 2011-12 for Traktor Chelyabinsk. A strong showing here will convince the Caps he doesn't need AHL seasoning.
4. Jack Campbell, G, USA (Dallas Stars) A bit like Visentin, Campbell will have a big spotlight on him in this tourney. He has been a clutch performer for Team USA but he may look over his shoulder now with John Gibson challenging him.
3. Mika Zibanejad, C, Sweden (Ottawa Senators) Ottawa's second-line center of the near future (likely in 2012-13) had a nine-game NHL trial earlier this season, so he should be ready to put on quite a display for Swedish fans and Sens scouts alike here.
2. Nail Yakupov, RW, Russia (2012 draft eligible) Is Yakupov the best player outside the NHL today? Is he the consensus No. 1 pick in 2012? These questions may be answered in this year's WJC. He has the ability to take over this entire tournament.
1. Mikael Granlund, C/W, Finland (Minnesota Wild) If Yakupov isn't the best non-NHLer in the world today, Granlund just might be. He's 19, so he's been through this before. A good bet to join the Wild next season, Granlund could be a huge factor here.

[30 Greats/30 Days] Jari Kurri
DISCLAIMER I know this isn't the day to post, but I was asked to post it today. More in comments.
30 Greats/30 Days: Jari Kurri Position: Right Wing
Teams: Jokerit (1977-80), Edmonton Oilers (1980-90), HC Devils Milano (1990-91), Los Angeles Kings (1991-94), Jokerit (1994–1995), Los Angeles Kings (1995-96), New York Rangers (1996), Mighty Ducks of Anaheim (1996-97), Colorado Avalanche (1997-98)
Drafted: 69th overall in 1980 by the Oilers
Years Played: NHL: 17
Career Stats:
GP | G | A | P | +/- | PIM |
1251 | 601 | 797 | 1398 | +282 | 545 |
Mini-Biography:
After playing his first three years of his professional career in his homeland of Finland, Jari Kurri decided he would enter the NHL draft. It was a decision he wouldn’t regret.
Jari Pecca Kurri was born on May 18th, 1960 in Helsinki, Finland. He started playing hockey when he was 4 years old and he was instantly a star. He played minor hockey in Finland until he was 17, moving on to play for ‘Jokerit’ of the SM-liiga (Finnish Elite League) for three years. He finished with a total of 80 points in those three years. He was then drafted by the Edmonton Oilers, 69th overall in 1980 NHL draft.
When Kurri arrived to the Oilers he was soon paired with Wayne Gretzky. The duo of Kurri and Gretzky became one of the most prolific scoring tandems ever to play in the NHL. In his first 7 seasons, he would reach the ‘100 point mark’ 5 times. During his time in Edmonton, he was nicknamed ‘The Finnish Flash’ (a name in which Selanne now holds). It was said that Kurri was ‘by far their most complete player’, and, while never winning the Selke trophy, was regarded as one of the best defensive players to play the game. Kurri was with the Oilers for every single one of their 5 Stanley Cup victories, 4 being with Gretzky. In 1984–85 he had 135 points and scored 50 goals in his first 50 games; however, his 50th game was the Oilers' 53rd game so it does not count as an official 50 goals in 50 games. A year later, he led the league in goals with 68. In 1984–85 Kurri set a record for goals by a right winger when he scored 71, which was broken by Brett Hull when he scored 72 goals in 1989–90. Kurri also scored the Stanley Cup winning goal in game seven against the Philadelphia Flyers in 1987. He remains the only Finnish player to score five goals in a single game, on November 19, 1983.
Kurri's contract with the Oilers expired in 1990 but his NHL rights were still owned by Oilers. Instead of accepting a new contract from the Oilers, he opted for a season in Italy and played for HC Devils Milano of the Italian Serie A. Kurri had 27 goals and 48 assists in 30 games while he played in the less competitive Italian league.
After a season in Italy, Kurri's rights were traded to the Philadelphia Flyers and then to the Los Angeles Kings on the same day. For the first time since the 1988 (Gretzky) trade, Kurri was reunited with Wayne Gretzky. The pair had a fairly successful campaign in 1993 leading the Los Angeles Kings to the Stanley Cup Finals where they faced off against the Montreal Canadiens. Kurri managed to put together 17 points in 24 games during the run, in which the Kings ultimately fell short and lost the series in 5 games. He would follow up with a few more solid seasons with the Kings, including 27 goals and 60 assists in 82 games showing in 1992-93. After the 1994-95 lockout, the Kings they decided they no longer wanted him, trading him to Mahnattan and after 11 games, back to the west coast, in Anahiem.
After his short stint with the NY Rangers, Kurri signed with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim. Kurri intended to play alongside Teemu Selänne and Paul Kariya, but was ultimately reduced to a smaller role on the second and third lines, despite a newfound confidence from rigorous summer training. The Mighty Ducks made it to the playoffs and defeated the Phoenix Coyotes in the first round but were swept by the Detroit Red Wings in the second round.
After his single season with the Mighty Ducks, Kurri was signed by the Colorado Avalanche, the 1996 Stanley Cup Champions. Kurri had a more defensive role with the Avalanche. Kurri's highlight of the season was his 600th NHL career goal, which he scored during a regular season game between the Colorado Avalanche and the Los Angeles Kings. Despite having a strong team with players like Joe Sakic, Peter Forsberg and Patrick Roy, the Avalanche were eliminated quickly in the playoffs by the Edmonton Oilers. Kurri played his final NHL game (Game 6) in Edmonton, before the Avalanche were defeated in the 7th game.
Rivals:
Mike Bossy/New York Islanders although Kurri never had a fierce or bitter rivalries with anyone, this match-up was an exciting, and respectable one. It may have only lasted two years, but when these two teams went to back-to-back Stanley Cup finals, it was exciting on both ends. Kurri and Bossy had both been in mentioned in the same breath as ‘2nd best player’ after Gretzky, in the eighties. They both wanted to prove why they were that player. In the 1982-83 season, both teams had exciting seasons to put them in the Stanley Cup finals, but the Isles swept their way to victory, with Bossy netting the game 4 winning goal. A year later though, the Oilers would come back and win the series in 5, capturing their first ever Stanley Cup and ending New York’s streak of 4 Stanley Cups.
Career Achievements:
- 5 time Stanley Cup winner
- 8 time NHL All Star
- 2 time NHL first team All Star
- 3 time NHL second team All Star
- 1 time Lady Byng trophy winner (1985)
- First Finn inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame
- Holds NHL record for most goals scored in a single post-season (19)

Extra Information:
Kurri is now the GM of the Finnish national men’s hockey team.
Kurri is married to former Miss Finland, Vanessa Kurri, since 2004; they have three daughters, Odessa (born 2002), Alissa (born 2005) and Isla (2012), and one son, Paulus (born 2007). Kurri also has twin boys (Joonas and Ville) from his first marriage to Tiina Kurri. Former linemate Wayne Gretzky is the godfather of Kurri's children from his first marriage

Team Breakdowns The Hockey Writers
Sweden
Sweden consistently sends high-quality hockey teams to all international tournaments they participate in. Whether it’s the Olympics, World Championships, or the World Juniors, they’re teams always push for a medal. This year’s World Junior team may not be as high-profile as teams they’ve had in past years, but there is still a lot of talent, and plenty of goal-scoring ability. There is a legitimate chance that Sweden could surprise everyone, and push their way into a medal game. Team Sweden finished in fourth place last year, after falling to Team USA in the bronze medal game. They’re expected to finish in a similar position once again, as Canada, Russia, and the U.S are the favourites to win the medals. However, like all Swedish teams, there are still players worth keeping an eye on.

Extra Information:
Kurri is now the GM of the Finnish national men’s hockey team.
Kurri is married to former Miss Finland, Vanessa Kurri, since 2004; they have three daughters, Odessa (born 2002), Alissa (born 2005) and Isla (2012), and one son, Paulus (born 2007).
