The Bunkhouse Stampede Finals and Royal Rumble are in the books, and as a head-to-head it’s best described as a stalemate. Neither show is what Dave would consider among the best cards he’s ever seen, and from the perspective of a tv viewer they were about what you’d expect. No strong overall lineup for either, and what was delivered wasn’t spectacular either. WWF had the edge in glitz, but not as much as usual because of the live factor meaning they couldn’t rely on post-production editing tricks. Here’s a sentence that describes a typical Raw today: “The three-hour show had too many replays and looked like it may have dragged in spots if you were there live.” Dave’s gotten some word from people who were there for the Bunkhouse finals live, and all rated it terribly as a live experience. From the tv viewer perspective, though, it was better than Starrcade despite some major issues (Dave says they owe the audience an explanation for why the Rock & Roll Express and Steve Williams were absent, as well as for the lack of Mike Rotunda vs. Sting which was pushed on WTBS half an hour before the show).
Dave’s tired of writing a lot of the same complaints about NWA, but they do seem to be responding to fans. They’re going to start showing the finishes to matches that go off the air on the following week’s show and have made changes to the announce desk. Jim Ross did a great job on ppv and toned back on calling every match an all-time classic like he did at Starrcade. But there were eight no-shows among the wrestlers and on Thursday night they had a terrible show in Los Angeles. Most of the no-shows were guys they pulled from the card to save money on flights. The Bunkhouse Finals were advertised with a 7 pm start time, but many of the tickets had 8 pm printed on them, and the show itself actually started at 6:35. Pm and ended at 9 pm, so those arriving at 8 missed most of the show. Not all the no-shows can be blamed on the promotion (Mighty Wilbur got injured, Rock & Roll Express appear to have up and quit), but some kind of explanation needs to be made for the fans. Between all that, getting chants of “Refund” after the Stampede and Dusty getting booed (which fans watching on tv heard) when he won the finals, NWA has significantly hurt its position in two of the biggest markets in the country in LA and New York. They’re making changes, slowly, but some changes need to be made or they’re going to sink. NWA fans come for action, but you can’t get the kind of action the fans want with the schedule they’re running (contrast to WWF which can get by with less action because their guys are seen as stars and the fans want to see the stars). Doing cross-country double shots on weekends is killing NWA, and they need to make new stars. Turning Flair face, since he’s more popular than almost anyone else, isn’t even something to do right now because Luger’s turn is in full throttle and they don’t have a heel to take up the slack. They could turn Dusty heel and have him feud with the Road Warriors, but they won’t.
In the past few weeks, NWA has managed to lose several guys they really shouldn’t have. Terry Taylor is gone apparently because the office had it in for him because of when he left the promotion in 1985. Big Bubba Rogers had become a good worker and had a great gimmick going, but WWF poached him. Rock and Roll Express apparently quit because they were unhappy about their push (though Dave thinks despite their ability and work, they’ve been on borrowed time for nine months now). Dave gives Steve Williams 50/50 odds of coming back and just kind of gestures to UWF as explanation. Sean Royal quit, and Chris Champion, Eddie Gilbert, and Brad Armstrong are all but disappeared. And more are looking to get out. Dave hates writing all this stuff about what Crockett’s doing wrong on the front page, especially when he’s been talking about it for months, and especially because he’s a fan of the NWA. He wouldn’t classify himself as a fan of WWF, but they’ve earned his respect with what they’ve done to take the business to another level and in the next two months he expects them to blow the whole wrestling business wide open. But WWF’s success isn’t the reason for NWA’s problems. WWF doing counterprogramming has made Crockett earn less money than he would have unopposed, and Dusty probably books himself the way he does because he knows WWF won’t steal him (spoilers: WWF gets Dusty in just over a year) and it’s hard to leave the limelight, but WWF isn’t the reason for most of Crockett’s issues.
According to the newspapers this morning, Wrestlemania IV will take place in Atlantic City’s Convention Center. Capacity is 16,000. There were rumblings of Vince being close to a deal in Vegas for either UNLV Gym or Caesar’s Palace, so Atlantic City’s a surprise. Wrestlemania is going to be more focused on ppv than closed-circuit this year, apparently. But most of the audience can’t get ppv, so they’ll still need closed-circuit in major cities.
Two weeks after Wrestlemania will be the Crockett Cup. Place is to be announced, and Dave thinks it’s high time Crockett re-establishes working relationships with at least one or two other North American promotions in order to help make the Cup a big event. They just don’t have the talent roster this year to get away with doing otherwise.
A correction on Starrcade: Dave reported a 6.6 percent buy-rate, but the reality was a 3.3 percent buy-rate. Dave heard they got 20,000 buys and just assumed it was of the 300,000 homes available on cable, but forgot to factor in the 300,000 homes it was also available in via satellite. Dave’s received reports that there were 6 million potential homes for the Bunkhouse finals, but that seems high to him. Even matching the buyrate of Starrcade at that number would mean over $3 million in gross revenue, and Dave doesn’t think they were remotely close to that.
- Anyway, Dave goes through the Bunkhouse finals. An estimated 7,000 were in the arena, and the dark match was Sting and Jimmy Garvin beating the Sheepherders by DQ. Nikita Koloff retained the NWA TV title against Bobby Eaton in a 20 minute draw. -2 stars. Larry Zbyszko beat Barry Windham for the Western States Title, with the match starting slow and getting very good in the last ten minutes. 3.5 stars. Road Warrior Hawk beat Ric Flair by DQ in the NWA World Title match. 3.75 stars. Dusty Rhodes won the Bunkhouse Stampede finals. Lots of blood, a lot of guys going the distance you wouldn’t expect to have the stamina to do so (the match was 26 minutes long), and it was exactly what was promised and was good stuff. 3 stars.
- As for the Royal Rumble, the crowd appeared to be nearly sold out with almost 18,000 in attendance. Ricky Steamboat beat Rick Rude by DQ. Heavy with rest holds and stalling before the final two minutes had them trading near falls constantly and getting good heat from it. 2 stars. The Jumping Bomb Angels won the WWF Women’s Tag Titles from the Glamour Girls in a 2/3 falls match. They started behind with Judy Martin getting the first fall, then the Angels won two straight falls with each Angel pinning Judy Martin (sunset flip and double missile dropkicks, respectively). It was a good match, but not great - the Angels missed a lot of moves and seemed to be out of shape. 3 stars. Jum Duggan won the Royal Rumble, last eliminating One Man Gang. The match was much better than Dave anticipated, and the match went on roughly at the same time as the Bunkhouse finals match. Better camera work in it, and Dave notes that WWF seems to have fudged the two minute intervals after a bit. 3.5 stars. The Islanders beat the Young Stallions (Paul Roma and Jim Powers; Dave’s nickname for them is The Barbie Dolls) in two straight falls. He makes a weird joke about a submission actually working on a pushed guy (Haku submitted Roma with a Boston crab) making him go out for “Oriental food” afterwards because it was so surprising. I’m too confused to even know what to make of the line. 2.5 stars.
Outside the matches, Royal Rumble had some other stuff. Andre and Hogan had a contract signing for the Main Event, where Andre slammed Hogan’s head into the table and pushed the table onto him. Dave’s amazed people buy Hogan as a face, because there’s just something naturally dislikable about people who act the way Hogan does and he thinks Vince could probably get Lee Harvey Oswald over as a face. Dino Bravo attempted to set a world bench press record. Of course, the weights were as legit as the half a million dollars Dusty supposedly won, but Bravo’s supposedly able to bench over 600 lbs legit. Jesse Ventura helped him with “715 lbs” and then claimed he didn’t help at all (the Road Warriors are scheduled to bench on the 30th and were originally planned to use legit weights, but they’ll have to use bogus weights to keep from looking weak next to WWF’s monsters now). Anyway, now they’ll bill Bravo as unofficial bench record holder, and that should get him heat because of the obvious cheating.
Next up then for WWF is The Main Event on February 5. Dave’s told not to worry about Andre, because his back is in much better shape than last year. He and Hogan are practicing daily and have worked out the gist of the match. Dave says you can be sure to expect Ted DiBiase to interfere somehow on the 5th.
Stampede is continuing to do good business and nearly selling out all their big shows. Chris Benoit and Great Gama get 4 stars (from Trent Walters, who I guess submitted the reports for the matches in Edmonton) for their Commonwealth Title match from January 9 in Edmonton.
[Stampede] Jason the Terrible has been made an “honorary member” of Bad Company, Bruce Hart and Brian Pillman’s tag team. So now in addition to the hockey mask he’s also got sunglasses over the hockey mask and a bandana and a black leather jacket. The whole getup is hilarious.
Do you remember Central States? Mike George won the WWA World Title tournament on January 23. They had 800 fans. Match ended on blood stoppage.
Speaking of blood, Keiji Mutoh is headed to Puerto Rico.
Tatsumi Fujinami and Kengo Kimura won the IWGP World Tag Titles from Yoshiaki Fujiwara and Kazuo Yamazaki on January 18. Riki Choshu and Super Strong Machine were originally slated to face the tag champs, but Choshu injured his knee and had to miss the match. Dave expects Choshu and Machine to face Fujinami and Kimura on February 7. He then goes on about how bad Choshu’s luck has been lately. Dave thinks he was supposed to win the tournament, except the Maeda shoot happened, and he was definitely supposed to win the tag titles (the match was scheduled for his hometown and New Japan actually does nice things for wrestlers in front of their home audiences). And with all the work they’ve put into getting Choshu on tv, it’s surprising they’ve phased him down the card so much from where he was.
Lots of stuff about Vader’s look in New Japan. On December 27 he wore long tights and had Road Warrior Hawk’s hair, and it didn’t get him over at all. On January 4 he had a mask and full bodysuit to hide his size. January 11 saw him ditch the bodysuit and keep the mask. The evolution of a mastodon, I guess.
Antonio Inoki began negotiations with Fuji TV after TV Asahi scheduled NJPW tv to move to midnight Mondays, and TV Asahi caved. They’ll now be on a 5 pm Saturday time slot. It’s not as good as their old Monday evening slot, but it’s not a death slot like midnight Monday.
Akira Maeda turned down NJPW’s plan to have him go to the U.S. Also, he and NJPW are fighting over his contract. They offered him a new contract for 1988 with a 15% pay cut and he’s not willing to sign it.
There are rumors that Inoki will wrestle Koji Kitao (the sumo wrestler mentioned a few weeks back) at the Tokyo Dome in April. Kitao is 24 years old and 6’5.5”, weighing 345 lbs. The story of his exit from Sumo is he apparently lost his temper and started kicking one of his sponsors (who is 92 years old) and the knocked his stable master’s wife through a sliding door. Dave’s been told if this match does happen, it could draw very big. Kitao is denying he’s going into wrestling (nope). Kitao was made a yokozuna in 1986, just before he turned 23, because the sumo hierarchy felt they needed a new young star to create interest in the younger generation of fans. But Kitao liked the party lifestyle and didn’t care for tradition, and sumo does not tolerate that. But you can’t demote a yokozuna, and that made him controversial (it would turn out that most of this was made up because Kitao’s stablemaster didn’t like him and felt he was underperforming and wanted him out - more on Kitao’s sumo years here if you want to read it). Turns out sumo is kind of worked too, though not as much as pro wrestling.
All Japan is promoting a “Martial Arts Olympic” show on April 2 at Sumo Hall, to feature all kinds of stuff. Tiger Mask II and Giant Baba will team against some foreigners, Japan Women’s Pro Wrestling (the group running against AJW) will have two matches on the show (Miss A vs. Harley Saito and Rumi Kazama vs. Xochitl Hamada). There will be boxing, kick boxing, the original Tiger Mask Satoru Sayama’s “shooting” sport he invented, shoot boxing (boxing + wrestling with gloves), and more. The whole show is being billed as a memorial service to Ikki Kajiwara, who created the Tiger Mask cartoon and comic.
When baseball season starts, All Japan’s tv will be moved to 10:30-11:30 pm Sunday nights. Usually they get moved to Saturday afternoon during baseball season, and this shift will lose Baba lots of money and viewers.
While Crockett and McMahon ran big shows on January 24, Giant Baba met with their rivals in Las Vegas. Baba’s plan in the U.S. is to send his guys, as well as Bruiser Brody, Abdullah the Butcher, Jimmy Snuka, Stan Hansen, and Terry Gordy to smaller promotions to help them fight against the big two.
Dave finally saw Hennig vs. Tiger Mask II. Not terrible, but no heat and little action, he thinks. Meanwhile, John Tenta’s improving well, and Baba seems high on Akira Taue, though he’s so new it’s hard to guess what kind of future he has.
[AJW] Yukai Omori’s retirement show will be on February 15. This was announced after her January 15 world title match with Chigusa Nagayo, where she said if she couldn’t win the title she was ending her career. They went 32 minutes to a double count out in the ring after both collapsed.
[Memphis] Lawler vs. Hennig for the AWA Title on January 18 had Lawler’s ring on the line as well. Hennig promised to give his dad the ring if he won, and Larry Hennig was there. The Axe helped Curt win, and Curt gave him the ring, but Lalwer stole it back.
Memphis local prelim wrestler Jerry Bryant has been diagnosed with Lou Gehrig’s disease.
Global Wrestling in Florida somehow turned what was an awful live show on January 22 into a good tv show. They taped on Friday night and by Sunday had it polished up into a good looking product. The miracles of post-production. Issues with the live show included starting 30 minutes late, long delays between matches, the ring mic not working, and bad wrestlers. What they lack in wrestling talent, though, they make up for in knowing how to make a tv show that’s on the level of World Class and better than Crockett or AWA.
Continental (Alabama) did a bench press contest between Lord Humongous (not Sid, but Gary Nation) and Doug Furnas. They fudged the weights here, as Humongous did 645 lbs and then Furnas did it twice (his best in competition has been 600) before Humongous pushed the bar down on Furnas and “injured his ribs.”
Apparently the Observer was mentioned positively in the Detroit News by Justice B. Hill in the January 17 issue.
Since Dave started writing this issue, he’s been flooded with fans writing about the Bunkhouse finals. The reaction he’s gotten has largely been negative, with those there live being extra negative about it. Crockett really needs to reserve three hours for the next time they do ppv - going too short pisses the fans off, and ppv viewers expected the show to last past 9 pm. Another difference between WWF and NWA is that WWF always gets their hottest acts on the mic at some point during ppvs and big live specials (twice in the case of Hogan and DiBiase at Royal Rumble), while at Starrcade they didn’t have Flair, Dusty, or Cornette talk once. Instead Jim Garvin gave the worst promo of his career, Michael Hayes was quiet for the first time ever, and they shoved Steve Williams and Nikita Koloff on the mic for some reason. At the Bunkhouse Finals they had no interviews, and getting mic time for Flair or Dusty or Luger while they set up the cage would have been a big help. More of Dave wondering when Crockett will realize they’ve killed the credibility of their world champion and thus killed the drawing power of the belt.
Michael Hayes has apparently quit Crockett and everyone expects him to go back to World Class. And if Steve Williams doesn’t come back, they’ll probably just forget about the UWF Title entirely rather than doing a unification match.
A couple letters this week requesting that Dave keep up the coverage of wrestling in Japan. Another couple letters praising how good Stampede has been lately. Canada and Japan, bringing us the best in wrestling.
Another letter writer asks Dave to realize how offensive it is to refer to a wrestling match as “a total abortion” and to consider that he’s probably offended many female readers of the newsletter. Dave apologizes and says he’ll stop using the term, before doing a “well, actually” bit. It’s a kind of weird response. Judge it for yourselves.
I apologize for that one and will quit using the term. Actually the term abortion for a bad match is a business term just like jobber, mark, babyface and the rest. But there are a few business terms (mainly for ethnic wrestlers and ethnic fans) which are in bad taste that I don’t use, so I’ll add that one to the list.
Tickets for Wrestlemania IV go on sale January 30. The best 2000 seats in the Convention Center are being reserved as freebies for casino high rollers. And as a heads up, this is the location it does take place at. They called it Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino during the show, but it’s the same building. More on that as we get to Wrestlemania.
If Dave can find the space next week, he’s going to talk about whether or not “30 minute matches which ‘tell a story’” work for today’s fans. He really enjoyed the Windham/Blanchard match on tv but there was no crowd reaction, so he’s beginning to wonder if this is even a style that resonates anymore.
Everyone’s asking Dave for predictions about Hogan vs. Andre. So here’s his prediction (and he is way off on many parts of this):
DiBiase will interfere and Andre will pin Hogan on 2/5, however Jack Tunney will prove he can’t be bought and hold the title up so Ted doesn’t get the title, and order a rematch in a cage at WM4 so Ted can’t interfere (and also so Andre can lose without doing a job). Hulk will win on a fluke, and they’ll run Hulk vs. Andre over the summer in your local cities after Hulk gets back from playing Hulk Hogan in the movies.
”There was a clip in Detroit about Hogan, saying that ‘he’s nice[r] than Kirk Gibson, but not by much.’” Gibson’s reputation is of being a total asshole to fans, especially kids.
Crockett is billing FlaiAnderson vs. LugeWindham on Feb. 6 as the first time Flair goes against Lex anywhere. It’s forgivable to forget Lex’s Florida days, but they’ve got FlaiBlanchard vs. LugeRhodes booked for February 2.
Apparently Road Warrior Hawk’s neo-nazi line is just a quote from The Breakfast Club. Okay. So I guess the first letter writer was mishearing him and he’s saying “Neo-maxi-zoom dweebie”? TVtropes gives us this, from the October 3, 1987 episode of NWA World Championship Wrestling: HAWK: "WELL, Tony Schiavone, There Are Two Kinds Of People, as far as me and Animal are concerned. Clamheads and Neo-Maxi Zoom Dweebies." (the Road Warriors consider themselves the latter). And corroborating with the WWE Network, yeah, the line comes through pretty clear. Network 4 minutes in, and yeah, he’s not calling himself a neo-nazi. Definitely an error by that letter writer, and what a weird line for Hawk of all people to utter.
THURSDAY:WWF’s Big Four are born; The Main Event; Rock & Roll Express, Michael Hayes, and Steve Williams update; Tenryu wins all the awards in Japan; and more
Full Summary of Wade Keller's Huge Interview With AEW President Tony Khan
Tony says he feels "really, really great" and "well prepared" about their first episode.
Feels like they're getting amazing press. With the help of TNT/Warner Media, they've had advertising through podcasts, social media, Facebook ads, mainstream TV ads (NFL, HBO, "wrestling TV"), airports, movie theater trailers, etc.
Since watching the shows from gorilla, while also producing, is different from just watching the shows live, Tony makes sure to always watch the shows back (usually the next day), and plans to continue that for TV. Mentions that he watched Fight for the Fallen after he watched WWE Extreme Rules, and was "blown away by how much better our show was" and felt like that was one of AEW's weaker shows.
Says Double or Nothing is "the most commercially and critically successful wrestling pay-per-view" of the year. Cites doing over 110,000 buys at the price point they set, for their first ever show, while not having any TV to build it up. Happy with how well All Out did, despite the challenges of losing Jon Moxley to a MRSA infection 10 days before.
Top-5 issues he's had with their shows (in no particular order):
1. The Double or Nothing Casino Battle Royale started out flat, because they wanted to build towards a moment with MJF and Shawn Spears (that would factor into the future animosity between them), but the downside is that their first impression suffered because of it.
2. They could have (and were supposed to) handle the chairshot from Shawn Spears to Cody better, but it didn't go off as planned. Thankfully Cody was okay, and thought the Cody/Shawn Spears feud was fantastic.
3. The Hangman Page vs. Kip Sabian match should not have gone as long as it did. He regrets not having cut 5 minutes from it, plus it went 2 minutes longer than it was supposed to. Felt like it dragged, and didn't do anyone any favors (thinks it should have gone 12-13, not 17-19 minutes).
4. Losing Jon Moxley to MRSA, but think they handled that as well as they could. Really glad Jon's okay, and they're focused on Moxley vs Omega going forward.
5. Concedes that the Buy-In shows probably shouldn't have so much comedy when the main card is so serious.
As far as TV goes, you can still expect to see the arenas set up in a similar way, great wrestling matches, and a high production value. You probably won't see things like the Moxley vs Janela match.
Tonight's countdown special on TNT is designed to help introduce AEW to new viewers. They suspect that a lack of wrestling on Tuesday night (for the first time in a long time) will lead to viewers seeking out wrestling programming on TV.
While a lot of people will show up for a TV premiere, if you don't deliver then they might not show up for Week 2. He "wants Week 2 to be just as big of an event as Week 1, and Week 3 to be just as big as Week 1 and 2, and so forth." They're planning on "rolling out huge things every week."
Talks about the importance of Being the Elite - and how AEW wouldn't exist without it - despite it being a very different tone from AEW's shows. Says the "Road to" series will probably be more in-line with the tone they're going for for their shows. Says there's nothing wrong with having a sketch comedy show on YouTube, and a serious wrestling show on TV (which isn't to say that they'll never have comedic segments).
Doesn't want to insult people's intelligence. Against "invisible cameras" and doesn't want to rely on "DQ's," "ridiculous ref bumps," and "distraction roll-ups" too often.
His own personal wrestling influences are wide-ranging, dating as far back as the WWWF, and including Memphis, Mid-South, 90s New Japan and All Japan, and 2010s New Japan (references Kenny Omega, Prince Devitt, and Kota Ibushi). Says he shares common interests with Cody regarding Jim Crockett Promotions, WCW, and Mid-Atlantic; and common interests with Kenny Omega and the Young Bucks with Japanese wrestling.
Even though "they all have different tastes in wrestling," they have a "similar mindset for what is good and what is bad." "90+% of the time" when one of them thinks they have a good idea, they all agree.
Hopes to grow the audience by putting on a great show, rather than trying to cater to specific demographics.
Designed to be more sports-based, but that doesn't mean they will lack drama (just like traditional sports aren't devoid of drama). Stories will stem from "wrestling in the ring," "personal issues," and "grudges" - with less focus on the "preposterous" and "ridiculous."
Wasn't surprised to see to see NXT go head-to-head with AEW on TV. Says that if AEW ran Tuesdays, he would have suspected NXT would move to that day (and says that arguably would have made more sense for NXT, since moving Smackdown to Fridays and potentially losing those Tuesday viewers).
While the shows will be wrestling-heavy, they will still have promos ("We have Chris Jericho and Jon Moxley: it would be insane not to let these guys talk") - "just not ridiculous, scripted promos."
Doesn't want to "over-produce" the commentary. While he has chimed in "a handful of times" for things to say - and while he regrets some things that have been said - he likes that it feels "real" and "organic."
Wants to have a show that's focused "in and around the ring" (compares to how the UFC is presented). Doesn't like so much focus on what's happening backstage.
Since the show is TV-14, they are being given more leeway and are being encouraged to be themselves and "be edgy."
In regards to WWE, they're not attempting to "counter-program" them or anything, but aren't above poking fun. They just don't want it to "become a habit" or "become a theme of the show." He was fine with Cody smashing the throne, because it came from his personal experiences. Says they're a "challenger brand," and while there isn't just one competitor, "there's one obvious competitor that we're always going to be compared to, for the foreseeable future." He doesn't think that's necessarily a bad thing, but actually a good thing - "especially after Monday."
Wants wrestlers to appear authentic. In regards to their characters, he doesn't want people to do things that they don't believe themselves. He's against writing dialogue for wrestlers, and thinks it can just result in them coming off as bad actors.
Says he's been "waiting for this moment for a really long time." In regards to the start date, he says that he's "known for a year and a half that this day is coming, and I could have told you that it was either going to be today or tomorrow." Cannot legally get into specifics, but says he has a "long-term," "multi-year" commitment with TNT.
In regards to wrestling being looked down upon by TNT in the past, he says that "absence makes the heart grow fonder." Says he was able to demonstrate factual numbers and patterns to say that "TNT had a big wrestling audience, and we can have one again. We're going to have one. We're going to have it tomorrow and we're going to have it a long time."
Committed to doing big, quarterly PPVs. Also interested in other big events (like the CEO-partnered Fyter Fest, and the charity fundraising Fight for the Fallen) that they can put out either through BRLive or streaming. Double or Nothing will always be held Memorial Day weekend in Las Vegas. All Out will always be held Labor Day weekend in the Chicago area. Full Gear has a chance to be the big, winter quarterly show (didn't necessarily seem to be as committed to the idea of it staying in the Baltimore area).
Says the ITV deal was not supposed to be announced (sounds very annoyed with this situation). They had replays scheduled for Sunday/Monday, "but they're still working on getting the show on earlier." He fully expects "this week" that they'll be up before that. It was just announced prematurely before everything was fully hammered out. "Hopefully stay tuned and we'll have some good news soon."
In regards to planning out TV, especially further down the line: "It's going to be way harder than we thought. It's going to be really hard, I know it's going to be, but it's not going to be the first time I've tried to do something I haven't done before. I think we have good aptitudes for this. I think it's going to be a challenge, and I don't expect it to be easy at all - believe me - but I do think we're going to pull it off and I think it's going to go great."
Agrees that wrestlers work best when they're amplified versions of their own personalities, but that's not necessarily always going to be the case (cites Kenny Omega's recent character change as not really being true to who Kenny is as a person).
Says that overall he's a lot less nervous with AEW than he is with the Jaguars or Fulham, because a lot more things are under his control.
In regards to keeping kayfabe on social media, says that he doesn't necessarily think it's a big deal and he trusts his performers to handle it well. He has had to talk to people a couple times in regards to bad things they've said on social media, but generally that isn't an issue. Says that could change a bit once they're doing weekly TV. Wade Keller seems to be of the mindset that wrestlers should always be "on," but Tony doesn't necessarily seem to agree (he gives the example of the media scrums not being done in kayfabe, and it being fine because it's clearly separate from the PPV).
As far as being wrestler-friendly, they'll have a relatively light schedule (every Wednesday this year, other than Christmas, plus Full Gear on a Saturday). Not everyone on the roster is going to be on every show - by design to give people time off and breaks for a healthier work/life balance. If it's a "reasonable request," he will allow wrestlers to work independent dates outside of AEW. They also have a tuition-matching program for people looking to get an education (says that he believes WWE also offers that, but it would be very difficult to work that around WWE's schedule), and some wrestlers are able to have careers outside of wrestling, as well (such as Britt Baker's dentistry, who he would never want to force to be on the road for 5 days out of the week). Many wrestlers also work various in-office position with AEW.
Doesn't want to be a "control freak," and is very open to feedback and suggestions from wrestlers. They try to have producers and coaches that are very agreeable guys to work with (cites Jerry Lynn and Dean Malenko), and he would rather say "yes" than "no" to a wrestler's idea.
In regards to AEW forcing WWE to make a better on-air product, he says "that is already clearly happening." "Yes, I do expect they will have to make some changes to their shows to accommodate some things that we're doing, like, for example pyro, I don't think it's a coincidence that pyro came back." "When there's a competitive wrestling market it's better for the fans, it's definitely better for the wrestlers, and I think it's better for the companies, too, because the competition not only brings the best out of both companies, but the market it creates - let's face it, people are very excited with what's going on between AEW and WWE."
Wants to do with the women's division what WCW did with the cruiserweight division: notably with the joshi and how they interact with the western women.
Thinks his roster is as good as what any other brand has on TV in regards to in-ring skill and personality.
In regards to the recent RAW ending, "if people like that: great. It seemed like a lot of people didn't, but I'm sure there's some people that did, and I don't begrudge those people for liking it. Different people like different things in wrestling - everyone's entitled to their opinion." Goes on to say that he would never ban anyone from the arena for wearing a wrestling shirt from another promotion, and just thinks it's cool that you're wearing a wrestling shirt, period.
Defining success, he says that it's more subjective with AEW than his other sports teams. They've set benchmarks, internal targets, and network targets as goals. "I would like for this show to have a good audience and for this show to be on for many years. I would like to make the wrestling business a better place, as we've already done in 2019, I'd still like to be doing that in the future." "I would like for us to be a profitable company. I expect to make back everything I've invested and then some. When we're making profits it'll be that much sweeter."
No plans for house shows this year, and when they do start doing them it will not be every weekend. Never wants to be running 5-6 days a week. He'd "like to settle into doing somewhere between 85 and 125 dates a year... but again, every person doesn't need to be on every show, and I don't really see why anyone would be wrestling 100 times a year or more, for us."
Katsushika Hokusai: Ehee! Now I’m getting ye! Ye have ties with Miyamoto Musashi! Ye art the unparalleled, great swordmaster’s adopted son, Miyamoto Iori! One of the remarkable people who inherited Niten Ichi-ryū on their passing, truly worth of being a heroic spirit, and truly suiting to be a Swimsuit Swordmaster! However, it is unbelievable still! How Miyamoto Iori-dono was a woman! Ye shocked me well and good! Ye did! Siegfried: …It's a discrepancy from the truth we're familiar with, but the feats from their their myths, legends, and history are still extraordinary. Katsushika Hokusai: Is that so then… Well, that goes for I as well! Seein’ as I yet be the infamous Katsushika Hokusai despite bein' a woman! Err, disregard Father here with that. He didn’t used to spit ink.
[Miyamoto] / [Iori]
Miyamoto Iori: Yep.
[Musashi-chan…?]
Miyamoto Iori: Do you know my teacher? Hahaha, cut it out. We resemble each other, but that’s it. Mash: Yes, you seem like peas in a pod to me…Is it from the blood relation you have with them? Miyamoto Iori: Are you kiddin’ me?! Iori-kun isn’t my biological child, y’know! Mash: ? Miyamoto Iori: Oh, uh, oopsie! You guys know Musashi-dono, and probably the irregular one to pan-human history, who’s a girl, right? I know that because I’m also a Heroic Spirit of pan-human history, but there’s no-relation otherwise! I just resemble them. That’s all there is. Yep. Mhm.
[……………]
Miyamoto Iori: …I-I mean, I get how the misconception came up from our faces, but it’s nothing. Nothing! I am Miyamoto Iori. One of the Swimsuit Swordmasters beckoned here, to Las Vegas! And concerning the Swimsuit Swordmaster Revered Bout--- I know a lot more than others about this Swimsuit Swordmaster Seven Colored Showdown. ...Wanna hear the details?
[Yeah, that’d be great] / [We did need to info gather]
Miyamoto Iori: Fufu, right! I’ll tell you what I know, and I’ll be concise about it too! I’d be glad to so long as I can get some udon or burgers!
[Udon…]
Miyamoto Iori: Uhhhhhh! Did I say "Oodawn"? I meant Vegas food, Vegas food! For now, just a burger…would be ok…
Getting Miyamoto their meal, she begins to explain what she knows.
Miyamoto Iori: ---The Dazzling Las Vegas! It already existed before, but this Las Vegas is different from the normal town. As someone from modern times, you can tell by looking at it, right? It should be easy for you to see that. But yes, this town exists as an arena for the Swimsuit Swordmasters to gather to! And at the same time, it exists with the full functions of Las Vegas. In other words… It’s a luxorious, Great Casino City! Aside from battling each other, you can go have fun in the casinos! It’s fine to battle as a swordmaster. It’s fine to play around in your swimsuit. It doesn’t matter if you choose to battle or play if you’re a Swimsuit Swordmaster! It’s plenty rational! In the actual Las Vegas, the casinos are managed and taken care of by enterprises and grand hotels, but… In this Dazzling Las Vegas, guess what! Each and every big name casino is controlled by a Swimsuit Swordmaster! Altogether, there are 5 great casinos! In other words, each casino is controlled by each individual group out of the 5 Swimsuit Swordmasters! Out of these 5… One has already proven to be different from the other Swimsuit Swordmasters. They’ve been singularly lauded as the mightiest, and most powerful out of all of them--- The Swimsuit Lion King, Artoria Ruler! She’s the manager of Casino Camelot, and in essence, dominates this Dazzling Las Vegas! Katsushika Hokusai: I see, now I get the main gist of it! Art-oria, ru-rah? It’d be grand of us to have a bout with them, and test her merit! Let’s act quick before we change our minds! Siegfried: I see, that sounds logical. Artoria Ruler. It sounds like we should at least make contact with this person. The chance are very high that they possess the Holy Grail, because of their dominance over this newly founded city. Additionally… It may also be the source behind our irregular Saint Graphs and Spiritron Outfits. Mash: I think so too! If they’re safeguarding the Holy Grail, then we'd be able to eliminate this microscopic Singularity too.
[Let’s get going!] / [Let’s investigate the Casino Camelot!]
Miyamoto Iori: (Chomp, snarf) Thanks fer’ the burger! It was super yummy. So, you wanna head off to Casino Camelot? It’s right over there, the big white walled castle. Hm---… ... …I don’t. I don’t recommend going there~. Katsushika Hokusai: Don’t ye be getting’ dull on us now! We said how we must visit them, so we could at least take a peak! Let us depart in haste! Mastah! Sir Jikufurito, ye may tag along as well, lest ye get left behind! With the way we sliced those large birds that blanketed the skies, we should have a complete victory in this Swimsuit Swordmaster Showdown! Miyamoto Iori: …….. (They’re worked up like this was their first victory. They seem more like a samurai going through a coming of age ceremony…) (And compared to the others, she’s more like a newborn fawn…) (But she's overflowing with untold potential. The four swords she wields seem to suit her too) (This girl, perhaps she’s…) Katsushika Hokusai: Come, lets get a move on!
Hokusai darts off, but eventually runs into an invisible wall at the castle-casino.
Katsushika Hokusai: …Nowuahh!? W-what sort of tickery is this…I can see it in front of me, but can’t draw closer…I cannot advance to the castle! Seems to be an invisible wall of sorts…but if its just a wall…
She attempts to cut it, to little avail.
Katsushika Hokusai: Kuu! Like I thought! My katana matters not! Voice: ---That spirit of yours is good. Alas, you don’t appear to hold a letter of challenge, fufu. Yet, I do respect the unguided rush attack to test the waters. You cannot pierce this wall. Not even as a Swimsuit Swordmaster. Without my own elegance, without my own blade, it is a futile effort. Because…
Swimsuit Bunny Arthur (Lancer) Ruler steps forward.
???: I am a Swordmaster as well. You may call me The Swimsuit Lion King. Unjust Swimsuit Swordmasters shall be not allowed entry here, and ignored thus. ...Mm? Katsushika Hokusai: ….ch! (H-how could this be…it’s as if the weight of the heavens are falling upon me…!) (I-impossible, could this be that thing others speak of!? The feeling of a blade against your throat, a killing intent!?) (Uwah----, Uwah---! Have I only now come to understand a sort of killing intent by the blade!?) (But I’m already a real Swordwielding Swordmaster of Swords, so it should be fine!) Swimsuit Lion King: Hmph. Four swords. How interesting. Your appearance and your many blades remind me of a certain someone. ---Your True Name? Katsushika Hokusai: Ka, Ka, Katsushika Hokusai! Ukiyo-e artist, now a Swordwielding Swordmaster of Swords, a nymph of ambitions! Swimsuit Lion King: Well well. So you’re one with numerous titles. Katsushika HokusauI: S-shaddap! I’m seriously serious about seriously being serious! What’s wrong with having a buncha pitches! "Lion King" sounds like a motto from somethin' else too!
The Lion King continues to smile, which freaks out Hokusai even more.
Miyamoto Iori: Wait wait wait! Hooooold on for a sec! You, did you just say that we can’t bust through this? Katsushika Hokusai: Elder Sis Iori! I-I mean, wow, ye sure did take y-yer time getting’ here… Swimsuit Lion King: “Iori”? Miyamoto Iori: Yes! Niten Ichi-ryū wielder, Miyamoto Iori here! Also with me is the western dragon slayer Swimsuit Master, my actual Master, and their sweet kohai-chan! Siegfried: ‘Sup. Mash: My name is Mash Kyrielight!
[So she’s a bunny this time…] / [Wait, you aren’t one of the Swimsuit Swordmasters right]
Swimsuit Lion King: I am the Swimsuit Lion King. I am the great ruler of this Casino Camelot. Feh, if you are not aware of who I am, then I shall educate you. This bunny outfit is the uniform of my Casino. Could that one --- be a rabbit who has gained intellect? Fou: Fo-u… Swimsuit Lion King: Regardless, I believe that this Miyamoto has their aim set on me as a fellow Swimsuit Swordmaster. Miyamoto Iori: R-really~? Who can say for sure? Whistle, whistle~ Siegfried: What are you doing, Iori. Mash: Um, I'm worried, about how she's just whistling like that for now... Siegfried: ?? Miyamoto Iori: So, what’s this problem about me setting my sights on you? For the Swimsuit Swordsmaster Seven Colored Showdown--- There isn’t a rule against cooperating with others in this “Revered Bout”! Everyone’s against each other, but there’s nothing against cooperation! So I took that idea and made some allies! Swimsuit Lion King: …Fufu, that all checks out. Katsushika Hokusai: Heeeeh, is that what this is? A Swordwielding Swordmaster of Swords going 1 on 1 would be a magnificent show, yet... …that’d go against it all! Totally! That’d be like how the 47 rōnin showed up at Kira Yoshinaka’s together uninvited! Or like Miyamoto Musashi hearing the noises of the great Yoshioka clan while alone, and slicing them up! ……………. …Nn, but, yeah. I think a Swordwielding Swordmaster of Swords would probably have a splendid 1 on 1s. Y’know, right Mastah? Like the battle on Ganryū-jima! The 1 on 1 of genius swordsmen at Ganryū, with Shinmen Musashi! A katana vs an oar! And well --- ye can’t step around how cool that battle was! Miyamoto Iori: (Mu. So that time was cool to her…I see, so Hokusai-chan is an honorable swordsman) Katsushika Hokusai: I’d be lyin’ to myself if I had said that I wasn’t yearning for a 1 on 1. At least one fight would be nice, because I’m here now as a swordsman. A 1 on 1! I wanna do that! Siegfried: …I can’t say I understand you enthusiasm. Katsushika Hokusai:
>!
Y-ye. What do ye think yer sayin’? Miyamoto Iori: It’s okay, it got through to me. I mean, yeah. Right? They say might makes right. You came to wield the power of the Holy Grail on your own as a Swimsuit Swordmaster, right? But since a 1 on 1 would be pretty risky for you, I think a 6 on 1 would be fair. Yeah, a 6 on 1 would be cool against big sis Iori. (Wink)
[That look…] / [Those numbers aren’t just for you, right?]
Miyamoto Iori: Whistle, Whistle~ Mash: Ah, Iori-san’s whistling again…! Swimsuit Lion King: …A fair and square, 1 on 1? Your words are in good honors. I shall answer that wish here and now. Miyamoto Iori: Huh, wha-!? Swimsuit Lion King: There was some correctness in Miyamoto’s words: a one on one battle against a Swimsuit Swordmaster casino manager would be poor in scope. However. If a Swimsuit Swordmaster were to stray, and act on their own, a one on one battle would be seen as fair play. ---In other words. You two may cross blades with one another. Miyamoto Iori: Wai-, hold hold hold hold up there, pardner! That’s logical, but… Swimsuit Lion King: You have led that girl thus far. And you have given yourself the role of teaching her to be a Swimsuit Swordmaster. Do not fret. In a special case, I shall grant you a [Chosen Battleground] without the need of a [Letter of Challenge]. I am the Swimsuit Lion King. I am the apex Swimsuit Swordmaster, as well as the strongest casino manager in Dazzling Las Vegas. Such a trifling matter will come at no issue for me. Now --- behold all this city has to offer, as you dance and splash among this performance for passersby! SWIMSUIT SWORDMASTER SEVEN COLORED SHOWDOWN!
Everything begins to shake, and a platform emerges from the ground, trapping Hokusai and Iori!
Katsushika Hokusai: Wh-!! Wh, whawha, w-w-w-w-what was that!? With her indication…things changed in a moment! Siegfried: This dense mana! Master! Mash: Could it be…is this a Reality Marble…? Our connection with the Wondering Sea has been severed too, senpai!! Miyamoto Iori: …It’s too late to do anything now. The Swimsuit Lion King has ushered forth a [Chosen Battleground], and now the selected Swimsuit Swordmasters must do battle. Katsushika Hokusai: Ye make it sound like we ought to. Yet if I don’t want to, I need not do so. Miyamoto Iori: Yeah, but! I feel the same as as you, but! It’s already here! If we don’t fight… If we don’t fight, even a bit…we won’t be able to get out of here…! Siegfried:
>!
Mash: You mean…there’s no way out unless you fight… Katsushika Hokusai: Heh. This ain’t good. But, we are Swimsuit Swordmasters. I still don’t know quite what a Swimsuit Swordmaster really does, but I can understand this much. Swimsuits, Swordmasters. Elegance, and blades. In other words, elegance must be seen in twine with swordsmanship! So then--- Kill or be killed…that the point to this? If that’s true, then that’s some fantastically wrong “elegance”. Miyamoto Iori: It’s as you say. It can be somewhat painful, but I don't believe you need to die. This is why all Swimsuit Swordmasters are Heroic Spirits: so long as their Spirit Origin remains unharmed, it’s possible to be restored to full. Katsushika Hokusai: That true? Makes sense. Fine by me. Siegfried: Hokusai… Katsushika Hokusai: I’ve already decided that I’ll become the strongest Swimsuit Swordmaster! I shall respect this wish and do battle with Miyamoto Iori’s Niten Ichi-ryū as such! Come! Come, come, come! With my waist drawn blade--- I’ll sense even a gunman’s adept strikes! Try to get past me, Iori-dono! Ye shall be diced long before ye can try! Now, unsheathe thine blade! How am I now!? Iori-dono! Miyamoto Iori: (You have an impressive disposition, Katsushika Ōi! Okay, I’ll get serious too!) Very well then, novice swordsman! The fun and games are over! Your current skills are immature, and as a nymph, the heavens excite you still. And they shall witness your catastrophe in your perfect lack of preparations! Embrace destiny, and hold fast to all you possess! I, Miyamoto Iori, shall answer your call, my opponent! Ah, but let me change a bit before all that happens. This’ll be better for a Revered Bout!
Musashi changes from her 2nd ascension, to her 1st one.
Mash: That’s…! Iori-san put on a really sporty outfit!?
[A sporty, competitive swimsuit for swordplay!] / […Well done…]
Miyamoto Iori: For my very first fight, a Western outfit wouldn’t be very elegant, y’know? It’s summer too, and I wanna be pool side! This doesn’t mean I'm going easy on you though! At the end there, you struck at me using your mind and body as one…something I didn’t predict. Katsushika Hokusai: ?? Swimsuit Lion King: Fufu. Indeed, this Swimsuit Swordmaster, the Beach Beauty Hokusai-san, may have some hidden potential yet. However, concerning Miyamoto…I believe it’s about time you drop this act of yours. Despite being the oldest competitor among the Las Vegas Swimsuit Swordmasters, you do not hold a casino to your own, and continue to wonder. You are a disgrace to us Swimsuit Swordmasters. Please make an effort for yourself. That’s all I have to say for now.
The Lion King walks back into her casino, barrier still intact.

Katsushika Hokusai: What’re ye gettin’ at…that battle was for… Swimsuit Lion King: That was naught but a single battle, nay, a single color! The strongest Swimsuit Swordsman must gather all Seven Colors using extreme elegance and skill! Mash: Seven Colors…do you mean we need to have 7 battles!? Swimsuit Lion King: Correct. In this Las Vegas, there are 5 Swimsuit Swordsman casino managers, including myself. If you wish to be known as the strongest Swimsuit Swordsman, then you must defeat all of the Swimsuit Swordsman casino managers. Since you’ve managed to acquire a win already, surely beating the rest will be no problem… For to be the strongest, means ---
She grins.
Swimsuit Lion King: To have dominance over Dazzling Las Vegas. Once you have done that, then I, the Swimsuit Lion King, shall be your opponent.
She sparks with energy, making the ground tremble and shake, demonstrating just how strong she really is.
Katsushika Hokusai: Ku…! (This killing intent, the feeling of the blade, is so heavy…! As I thought, this mighty one is truly the strongest of all Swimsuit Swordmasters!) (B-but in the end…it’ll be…me!) Swimsuit Lion King: The strongest Swimsuit Swordmaster. If you yet wish to obtain this title, Beach Beauty.... I’ll be the strongest Swimsuit Swordmaster! The one who’ll get crowned that title --- will be me! Siegfried: …We couldn’t support you due to that 1 on 1 a while ago, but next time I shall brandish my blade alongside you. I have no desire to be crowned strongest Swimsuit Swordmaster, but only to relinquish the Holy Grail from the Swimsuit Lion King. I will fight for that purpose. If we seek to keep fighting in turn, then we should seek out more information about the others, to prevent this situation from happening again. Mash: I-I agree. Casino Camelot is shrouded by a powerful bounded field, but--- Judging by what she told us, if we defeat the others, then we’ll get a second chance to face her again!

Creating a movie subreddit to discuss, critique, remember, quote, and otherwise enjoy classic/cult movies of the last 25 years or so. Does one exist and if not, what’s the best way to create this subreddit?
I’d like to create a subreddit/community of people who would like to discuss 3 or more classic/cult movies of the past 25 years or so. Working for 20 years or so in kitchens and restaurants I’ve noticed there’s a good deal of people who absolutely love quoting cult movies, discussing behind-the-scenes information and otherwise just appreciating the movies of my youth and early adulthood. My plan would be for moderators to jump on every day or every other day and drop the name of a classic/cult movie. For instance, as a moderator I’d start with a movie title headline: Tombstone (1993) [Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Sam Elliott, Michael Biehn] The film is based on events in Tombstone, Arizona, including the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral and the Earp Vendetta Ride, during the 1880s. It depicts a number of Western outlaws and lawmen, such as Wyatt Earp, William Brocius, Johnny Ringo, and Doc Holliday. Tombstone was released by Hollywood Pictures in theatrical wide release in the United States on December 25, 1993, grossing $56.5 million in domestic ticket sales. The film was a financial success, and for the Western genre, it ranks number 16 in the list of highest-grossing films since 1979.[6] Critical reception was generally positive. This could then spawn a great conversation ranging from great quotes from the movie, “Maybe Poker’s just not your game, Ike. I know – let’s have a spelling contest!” - Doc Holliday Anyone subscribed to this subreddit could then riff off one another with quotes before or after this. This movie has amazing dialogue between the characters and it seems like people love quoting great movies with great dialogue. Others could chime in with some trivia, In an interview with True West Magazine in October 2006, Kurt Russell admits that after original Director Kevin Jarre was fired, he directed a majority of the picture. According to Russell, George P. Cosmatos served merely to make things run smoothly. Also, in the True West interview, Kurt Russell states that the film was nearly cast with Richard Gere as Wyatt Earp, and Willem Dafoe as Doc Holliday. And still others could reminisce about what the movie meant to them when it was a movie in regular rotation for someone personally, For me, when I was about 14 or 15 (1994-1995) is when I started watching this movie over and over. It was that age where my friends and I first discovered alcohol and weed, and we’d just drink horribly cheap beer (Natural Lite, Old English Malt Liquor and horrible “bammer” brick weed full of seeds. We would sit in our respective parents basements or wherever and make up drinking games to play along to this movie. Drink whenever someone pulls a gun. Smoke whenever Doc Holliday is on screen. To my knowledge there aren’t any subreddits like this. Most of the movies being discussed on movies are current movies. I’d like to create a subreddit community entirely based on discussing the cult classics of the 80’s until recently. Also, the awesome part is that once each thread has been started it stays up for all time for people to add to whatever tangents appear over time. I would imagine with a core group of just a hundred or so redditors this could become an active and fun subreddit to contribute to. Anyway, I’ve never started a subreddit so I have no idea how to go about creating one, how to moderate one, how to get the subreddit out into the World to attract people to contribute or anything really outside of posting shit talk from my phone on Reddit. I imagine it’s probably best that I get this started from my laptop and not my tablet or phone. Any advice, tips, ideas, or anyone wishing to contribute, moderate or be involved in anyway please let me know. I appreciate any and all feedback and I hope to get this going sometime soon. I know I’m not the only 38 year old who has spent a significant part of his life watching and rewatching movies over and over. Now I just need to find the other movie buffs spread across Reddit and hopefully get this subreddit going. I was toying with the name cultandclassicmovies but would love and appreciate any feedback. Thanks Reddit Community!
My favourite sub-90 minute Euro games outside the BGG top 200.
I have found I have an affinity for Euro games that fit in the category of meaty games that are fairly quick to play. These games have a good amount of decisions and run about 60-90 minutes. I have really enjoyed many of these in my collection, here are some of my favourite underrated games in this category (outside the BGG top 200). Reverse BGG ranking order: Dokmus (Rank: 2624): Since this is a newer game it will probably rise quite a bit on the BGG rankings. Dokmus has a bit of a similar feeling to Kingdom Builder, each turn you just build three of your pieces next to your existing pieces. But at the beginning of each round you select special powers that can let you move and rotate the map tiles that comprise the game board, and also powers that let you move your pieces around. Surprisingly thinky and is short enough to be considered a filler+ game (a bit beyond filler), at most about an hour even with a full 4 players. PAX (Rank: 1718): Competitive card game with a bit of a co-operative element as players all try to be the winner but also make sure that Rome doesn't get the upper hand (and everyone loses). Tableau builder where you are competing in majorities with other players and against the game ('Rome'). Definitely an underrated gem and glad I found a copy. IKI (Rank: 1304): Really neat game that features a rondel around which you move and you can visit shops around the marketplace and buy and trade goods. You hire shopkeepers to populate the market with shops and you move around the market in order to take actions at market stalls owned by yourself and other players. Takes about 90 minutes for 3 players and is always a pleasant experience. Council of Four / Council of 4 (Rank: 1290): By the designers of the Voyages of Marco Polo and Tzolk'in: The Mayan Calendar. Clever take on set collection and route building, it plays pretty quickly and has a good amount of tension because of the race for the bonus points for building in certain regions or cities. Each time you build in a city if you add to your route you get to trigger every other bonus on that route, so has a nice sense of progression throughout the game. Hope this gets more widely distributed with the coming reprint by CMON. About 90 minutes with 3-4 players. Guilds of London (Rank: 1124): Not sure if I can call this one underrated because it's still pretty new and might rise more in the rankings. The multi-use cards mixed with area control/influence makes for a really nice hand management puzzle each turn. Your mileage may vary with playtime for this because the area control element can really trigger some AP, I've had 3 player games go just over an hour while other 3 player games have been up to 2 hours. Paris Connection / SNCF (Rank: 1108): A nice filler+ game (about 30 minutes) that still plays really well at the higher player counts, 6 players works well which is a rare thing. Tough decisions for a game where you only have two possible actions: expand a railroad (increase or limit the value), or trade in a share of one company and take two shares of another company. The whole game is all about the investment and expansion of companies so you have to watch what other players are doing and predict future values. Il Vecchio (Rank: 1102): Neat pick up and deliver game by Rudiger Dorn that plays in 75-90 minutes. I've found it plays well at 3 or 4 players, the action selection spots that move around the board is a neat twist. Planning to do multiple actions is often tricky and you need to predict what other players do in order to have your pieces in place to take advantage of the moving action selection spaces. Great game and it's sad this gem is out of print. Village of Valeria (Rank: 1097): Will probably move up the rankings since it's a 2016 release, but this is a great little card game. It has a role selection mechanism where the active player chooses and action and takes a bonus while every other player gets to follow that action (albeit without the bonus). Although a similar action selection mechanism to Race for the Galaxy or San Juan, this game adds a bit of resource management with having to build resource production spots in your tableau in order to construct buildings in your tableau. I've enjoyed this even at the higher player counts and it usually clocks in at just over an hour, depending on the number of players. Ulm (Rank: 1073): This is a newer title so will probably go up in the rankings, very clever action selection mechanism that makes for fairly quick turns. There's quite a bit of luck in the game, but part of the game is making sure you are prepared to take every action and thus mitigating the luck of the draw. This game rarely takes more than about 60 minutes which is nice for a light Euro. Royal Palace (Rank: 911): From the designer of Troyes and Ginkgopolis, this is a hybrid of area control and worker placement, the number of your pawns that are in a space has an effect on the production of the tile, and if you have to most pawns on the tile you get a benefit. After a couple rounds the turns are pretty quick as you try to gain resources to earn the most points from noble tiles and end game scoring. Roll Player (Rank: 865): Another newer title that is getting an expansion later this year so I would expect this to move up, it's a light-medium weight game that focuses on dice manipulation and tableau building. Add dice to certain character attributes to use the powers to change the values of other dice, and gain equipment for your character for end game scoring and special powers. 60-75 minutes with 3-4 players. Walnut Grove (Rank: 846): Games that feature simulatenous action phases makes for really snappy gameplay with very little downtime. Walnut Grove is a really cool tile-laying game where the tiles you add to your tableau increase the amount of resources you can produce from your farm. Pretty easy to teach and the action selection rondel makes for some tension because you only get 8 actions in the town through the whole game, so you want to make each action count. Everyone I've tried this game with has ended up really enjoying it. Murano (Rank: 792): Fast playing rondel and tile-laying game from the designers of Village. The shared rondel is unique and you have to plan around other players potentially taking actions you really want because the cost of taking actions repeatedly goes higher and higher as you move more boats around the rondel. The decisions don't cause too much AP though so the game moves along at a nice pace. Royal Goods / Oh My Goods! (Rank: 759): Love this little card game from Alexander Pfister, the designer of Mombasa, Broom Service and Great Western Trail. The whole game is a tight little engine builder where you are setting up and running production chains of resource conversion buildings in your village. The expansion adds a great campaign module that makes this into a very different and bigger experience. Merkator (Rank: 737): This Uwe Rosenberg game isn't talked about much but it's very different from his other games. At the core it's a pick up and deliver and recape fulfillment game, but the system of fulfilling contracts adds a puzzle element of how to get the most return for each action. It plays pretty quickly at all player counts and the fact that you can follow other players actions (paying a cost) means that you are involved in other players turns. Kanagawa (Rank: 672): Charming little card drafting and set collection game that has been very enjoyable as a filler+ sort of game (a little longer than filler). Plays very well with 3-4 players and has a nice and approachable theme, I've taught it at meetups a few times now and it's been well received by new players. Tournay (Rank: 668): From the designer of Troyes, this little card game shares the artwork style and theme of Troyes but the gameplay is of course very different. The spatial element of the tableau of cards you are building (a 3x3 grid) is really nice, every card you build either has effects based on neighbouring cards or are worker placement spots that you and other players can use for their effects. Really cool little game. Gold West (Rank: 642): Fast-playing resource management game. I've played this with a variety of groups, it works well surprisingly well for new gamers as an introduction to light-medium Euro games. The game is a good length even with 4 players (about 60 minutes) which is great for a game with so many tactical options on your turn. The resource management aspect of the supply track is still challenging even after many plays. Hansa (Rank: 616): Pick up and deliver game with a bit of area influence, set up trading posts in cities and buy and sell goods. Simple game to teach but with nuanced decisions throughout the game. Plays quick and best at about 2-3 players. Strasbourg (Rank: 603): One of my favourite auction games, the influence card mechanic is so unique and makes for really difficult decisions at the beginning of every round. The scoring cards are tough to achieve and contribute to a very tight game that plays quickly, definitely best at 5 players. Plays in about 75-90 minutes at full player count, the restrictive scoring is very different for a Feld game, and the limited opportunities to execute your plans make for excruciating decisions when formulating your bids for each round. Fleet (Rank: 602): Bidding game and tableau builder where you are buying fishing licenses and launching boats to acquire fish and more money. I like little card games like this that are easy to teach and the expansion cards add a lot of variability to the game. Peloponnes (Rank: 571): Civilization building game mixed with auctions. You bid for tiles to add to your civilization that either boost your resource production or give you special powers or resource conversion. Plays fast and the expansion adds components for higher player counts as well, even with 5-6 players it rarely takes longer than an hour. Metropolys (Rank: 555): Auction and area control game where you are bidding with a fixed set of buildings (every player starts with the same values of numbered buildings). Every player has a different end game scoring goal and competition for areas can be very cutthroat. Lots of interaction is this game, plays best at the full 4 players in about 75-90 minutes. Vanuatu (Rank: 542): This one might run a bit long at 5 players, but with 3-4 players it runs about 90 minutes. Worker placement game with a bit of an area majority aspect to how the action spots are executed once everyone has placed their workers. Very unique and glad it got a reprint last year. The Speicherstadt (Rank: 518): Great auction mechanism where the meeples players place on a specific card determine both the purchasing order and the cost of the card. It was rethemed as Jórvík last year but I do prefer the theme of the original. Super Motherload (Rank: 498): Deck builder for a focus on gaining resources from the board, the game plays best at 2-3 players and clocks in at about 90 minutes at most. You are rival mining companies and digging under the surface for resources, but everyone can dig from the same set of tunnels, so you have to be sure not to set other players up for big plays. Las Vegas (Rank: 492): An area control game where you roll a bunch of dice? Sign my up. I really enjoy the tactical nature of this dice rolling game, each turn you roll your dice and allocate all of one number to the casino of the matching number, at the end of the round majorities in the casinos will pay out cash of varying amounts. However, I will always recommend playing with the "slot machine" mini expansion or finding a good proxy for it if you can't find the card/tile. It adds another option for your dice while keeping the decision space fairly tight. The Palaces of Carrara (Rank: 487): From Kramer and Kiesling (designers of El Grande), this is a very tight Euro where you never have enough turns or resources to do everything you want to do. You are collecting marble to build cities but the key is that each city can only be scored once by any player, so it's a race to meet the requirements to score those cities. The variable end game conditions is a nice addition to and adds to the replay value. And ... I am a sucker for games with a wheel. Finca (Rank: 477): One of my favourite rondel games, it's a shame this is still out of print because halfway through my first play of this I knew it would be a keeper. Very elegant and simple to teach, your workers around the rondel determine how many spaces your pieces can move and how many fruits that an action space can produce. Louis XIV (Rank: 456): This is getting re-themed this year as Mafiozoo, an area control game by Rudiger Dorn. The theme is definitely on the dry side (gaining favour in the court of Louis XIV), although I'm not too drawn to the forthcoming animal mob theme either. Those that have played Istanbul will recognize the movement mechanism in Louis XIV, but the difference is that the actions on each tile are executed in order at the end of the round, and if you have the most pieces on a tile you get special benefits. Coal Baron (Rank: 438): Worker placement game where you can go in the same spot as another player but you just have to pay 1 worker more (similar to the worker mechanism in Keyflower). Each round goes until everyone uses up all their workers so trying to make the most of your worker pool is key. The turns are snappy and the pace of the game is quite quick. The scoring that ramps up over the course of the 3 rounds is an interesting race to hold the majority in the three scoring categories. Homesteaders (Rank: 412): Very tough little auction game with a mix of resource management. The game lasts 10 rounds and each round you are bidding on the opportunity to build certain types of buildings. The building give you resources and income which are both crucial, losing a bid in this game can be tough and totally derail your plans. Nice to see that this is coming back into print later this year. Medici (Rank: 405): A rare game that plays 6 players really well but still offers a good amount of decision making. I enjoy the mix of auction with a bit of push-your-luck element, the fact that you bid with your victory points is great, it really increases the tension to realize you are paying directly with your end game score. Plays very quickly at a full player count, rarely lasting over 60 minutes even at 6 players. Broom Service (Rank: 402): This is one I wouldn't really call underrated, in fact it won the Kennerspiel! But I really enjoy this game and it definitely falls in the category of fast playing Euro. The simultaneous selection of cards for the rounds speeds up the gameplay and the card play has a good amount of tension because of the possibility of losing your action if someone calls the same role. Great game with lots of interaction. Tinner's Trail (Rank: 378): Martin Wallace game that is best at 4 and plays in about 75-90 minutes. Auction game where you bid for parcels of land and mining rights, and you build improvements to help extract and sell the copper and tin. Very simple to teach but the decisions are surprisingly hard and have many ramifications, lots of player interaction both in the auction phase and with improvements that potentially benefit your neighbours too. 51st State Master Set (Rank: 322): Incredible surprise hit for me, I didn't expect too much because I was lukewarm on Imperial Settlers, but this blew me away after the first play. Definitely one of the best engine builders I've played and very quick pace with 2 or 3 players. The resource conversion from raw materials (cogs, guns, fuel) to contact tokens makes it challenging to execute your plan. What's also great about the game is how fast it ramps up, the game will usually end in the 4th round of play and it's satisfying to see your engine humming and churning out points. Ginkgopolis (Rank: 284): This game from the designer of Troyes has quickly rocketed up my all-time game rankings (in my Top 10 now), clocks in at about 75 minutes with 3 players. Really interesting gameplay that combines engine building with area control and card drafting. You select your actions simultaneously so downtime is not much of an issue, the gameplay is smooth and the game always seems to last the right amount of time for the weight. The only negative is that it is a bit hard to teach, but having some player aids printed off from BGG really help in that regard. Vikings (Rank: 267): I dont hear about this much and picked it up because of Rahdo's runthrough of it. Really nice tile laying game that plays best at 3, offers interesting decisions while clocking in at about an hour. For something ranked just outside the top 200 I don't see this game mentioned much. It's out of print but if you see a copy for cheap at a swap (like I did) then don't hesitate to pick this up. Some games within the top 200 fall in this category: Saint Petersburg, Glass Road, Samurai, Ra, Hansa Teutonica, Roll for the Galaxy and Race for the Galaxy and Isle of Skye What are some of your suggestions for this category of games? Any I should look into? **edit: added BGG links
The following is a list of 1000 movies that I have compiled by trying to be as objective as possible, which is an obvious lie, it's a very subjective list, but it should be valuable for anyone interested in finding new movies. The majority of these titles are probably familiar to most of you anyway. Let me know your thoughts!
